ARREST MADE IN DOWNTOWN BOMB HOAX

On November 8th, 2022, Fort Myers Police Department responded to Centennial Park in Downtown Fort Myers in reference to an unknown object being placed on display that portrayed a political message. Upon arrival officers located an object resembling a mannequin hanging from a tree with several political driven statements written on it.  There was also equipment attached to the device that resembled items commonly used in the manufacturing of explosive devices.  The Lee County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad responded to the incident to investigate.  It was learned that the device was a hoax bomb that was constructed to resemble an actual explosive device.  

Through an unrelated investigation, it was learned that the person responsible for displaying this hoax device resembling an explosive device was Kent Olson Kelley 11-20-53 of Fort Myers.  

On august 10th, Fort Myers Police Detective Ciulla developed probable cause to charge Kelley with (1) count of Florida State Statute 790.166 (3) – MFG Poss. a hoax weapon of mass destruction.


Kelley remains in the Lee County Jail.
