Tip Leads Police to Weapons and Drugs

Last Updated Mar 2012

(Fort Myers, FL: February 1, 2012) - The Fort Myers Police Department recently received information in reference to people inside a residence with handguns and rifles.  Police responded to a home on South Street to investigate. After receiving consent to search the home officers located the following weapons between a mattress and box-spring in one of the bedrooms:  one loaded Sig Sauer .380 caliber firearm, one loaded Taurus PT111 .9mm firearm, one loaded Taurus PT-24-7 .9mm firearm, one loaded Colt AR-15 A2 .223, one loaded Century International Arms AK-47 and thirty grams of marijuana. Chief Doug Baker says the tip possibly saved a life or prevented a crime from happening. “These are the types of guns that are used to commit violent crimes and homicides. Someone saw something that didn’t look right and called us. This is the kind of information we need to make our City safer.” The guns were seized for laboratory analysis and the investigation remains ongoing at this time. “We need more people actively involved with crime prevention,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator.  “If you have information about illegally possessed weapons or about people committing crimes, there are several ways to do the right thing.  Call Crime Stoppers, submit a tip online, text-a-tip, or talk with police officers when they canvas your neighborhood.  You will remain anonymous and protected, and as in this case, you can walk away with a cash reward. But most importantly, you’ll help remove the fear of violence and the opportunity for innocent victims to get hurt.”

Police ask citizens to always report suspicious activity. Anyone with information is asked to call FMPD at 321-7700, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS or text message C-R-I-M-E-S (274637) Keyword FMPD.  Tipsters can remain anonymous.
