FMPD Honors Six for Doing the Right Thing

Last Updated Dec 2010

(Fort Myers, FL: December 13, 2010) - On Tuesday, December 14, 2010 the Fort Myers Police Department’s “Do The Right Thing” program will honor six children for their good deeds.  Chief Doug Baker will present awards to the following students at a ceremony in the City of Fort Myers Council Chambers at 3 p.m.

  • John Slobodzian, a 4th grader at Edison Park Elementary School was nominated by his principal. John noticed that the principal ran out of prizes for the school’s treasure chest. The next day he brought in Matchbox cars for the kids. His generosity put a smile on the principal’s face, but more importantly, on the faces of several children.
  • Miracle Cheeseborough, a 5th grader at Edison Park Elementary School was nominated by her teacher. Miracle was performing Safety Patrol Duties when she observed an adult male entering the building carrying boxes.  Miracle politely asked the adult what his business was in the school and if he had children at the school. The person in question was indeed a parent and was so impressed by the way Miracle took charge he praised Miracle’s efforts to her teacher.
  • Dylan & Riley Howington are brothers who attend Edison Park Elementary School and were nominated by their principal. Riley and Dylan had a lemonade stand in which all of the proceeds went to Autism Speaks. Their goal of $200.00 is to help researchers learn more about how to cure autism. Dylan is a 2nd grader and Riley is in the 4th grade.
  • Cece Miller and Dejon Babb are 12th graders at Dunbar High School. They were nominated by their School Resource Officer. The officer was involved in a struggle with a person he was arresting and lost the school’s portable radio. The students located the radio and recognized the importance of returning it. They could have easily walked away and ignored the radio.

The purpose of the “Do The Right Thing” program is to reinforce positive actions among local youth.  It is also designed to enhance relationships between local law enforcement members and school-aged children.  The media is encouraged to attend this rewarding event.
