The Florida Crime Prevention Association (FCPA) recognized the Fort Myers Police Department with two awards for outstanding efforts in crime prevention. Chief Doug Baker received the 2009 President’s Award and FMPD volunteer Taunya Cola received the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award.
(Fort Myers, FL: November 5, 2009) - The FCPA is the oldest existing crime prevention association in the United States and is dedicated to the higher ideals of crime prevention and community safety. The FCPA awards recognizes and honors law enforcement and community partners for their exceptional efforts toward preventing crime, while educating and involving their communities in effective, long-lasting prevention strategies.
Chief Baker was recognized for his innovation bringing the Illegal Gun Bounty Program to Southwest Florida as well as his use of technology for texting and web based crime tips. The FCPA also recognized Chief Baker for the development of the Community Offender Probation and Education Unit and the department’s efforts to remove more than 300 guns from City streets so far this year.
Taunya Cola was recognized for her involvement in the Stop the Violence program. A program where residents, business leaders and police remind citizens with red wristbands that everyone has a role in crime prevention. They also recognized her endless efforts to work with the police department and City school children.
