UPDATE: Connie Pierce (d.o.b. 4-2-53 of Cape Coral) died in today’s crash. Jesus Brogan Avilez (d.o.b. 4-4-80 of Lehigh Acres) was driving the garbage truck. Charges are still pending in the crash. Investigators believe wet roads could have been a factor in the crash. This morning police cited the garbage truck driver for driving to fast for the conditions.
(Fort Myers, FL: June 29, 2009) - Today at 3:17 the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of Colonial Boulevard and Summerlin Road. A preliminary investigation reveals the following: A Waste Management garbage truck was traveling east on Colonial Boulevard. The driver of the truck sideswiped two cars waiting in the left turn lane. The garbage truck driver lost control, the truck flipped onto its side and landed on top of a SUV, also waiting at the intersection. The driver of the SUV was killed in the crash. No one else was hurt. Right now the investigation is still ongoing and the victim's family has not yet been notified. Police ask drivers to avoid the area if possible.
