On Friday, June 21, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. the Fort Myers Police Department’s Juvenile Arrest and Monitoring Unit (JAM), the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and probationers participated in a community cleanup around the Hope Gardens neighborhood.
The FMPD JAM Unit monitors young people the courts have assigned to probation or home detention. The goal is to build a relationship with the youth and hopefully prevent them from committing more crimes. The neighborhood cleanup gave the teenagers an opportunity to come together and work as a team, while earning appreciation from the community; along with a chance to complete court ordered community service hours.
Hope Gardens is located in the heart of Fort Myers. It is bordered by Ford Street, Edison Avenue, Henderson Avenue and Franklin Street. The homeowners take pride in their neighborhood and work together to keep it clean and safe. While residents maintain the grounds within their small community, keeping up with the area outside, is sometimes difficult. Friday, the youth filled the back of a pickup truck with bags of litter and garbage.
