We’d like to take this time to present a friendly reminder on the severity of texting while driving. On Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 1:12 a.m. Officer Ivan Moorer of the Fort Myers Police Department was traveling southbound on Veronica Shoemaker Boulevard approaching Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Officer Moorer began to notice the unusual driving behavior of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am directly in front of his patrol vehicle. The driver was swerving and slowing for no apparent reason.
The officer continued to investigate the driving behavior as the vehicle traveled westbound onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. At this time the in-car camera captured the Pontiac abruptly accelerate across the inside lane of westbound travel, drive up onto the sidewalk where it violently struck a guardrail, bus stop sign and tree before rolling over. The driver, (Michael James Woody Jr. d.o.b. 11-27-1990 of Fort Myers) was able to climb out of the overturned vehicle and crawl to safety.
During the traffic crash investigation Woody admitted to the officer he was texting and took his eyes off the roadway. “Texting and driving is a serious epidemic. We hope the in-car video in this incident is a wake-up call to those that text and drive”, said police spokesman Lieutenant Victor Medico. Thankfully no one was seriously injured. Woody was cited for careless driving and texting while driving.
