Categories: News

On Sunday, June 16, 2013 the Fort Myers Police Department arrested Gilberto Sanchez-Mojica (d.o.b. 9-18-85 of Fort Myers) for robbery with a firearm, firing a weapon in public and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

On Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 11:56 p.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a robbery at the Sunoco Gas Station located at 2907 Cleveland Avenue. Police learned an unknown suspect armed with a gun entered the store with what appeared to be a black shirt wrapped around his head to conceal his identity. The suspect fired one round into the ceiling, jumped over the counter, grabbed money from the register and then fled the scene. Intelligence Information from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office led FMPD detectives to believe the Sunoco robbery was related to other robberies that had occurred in the County.

On Friday, June 14, 2013 forensic evidence left behind by the suspect at the Sunoco identified Sanchez-Mojica as the perpetrator. Law enforcement immediately began looking for him. On Saturday, June 15, 2013 The United States Marshals Florida Regional Task Force located Sanchez-Mojica at 1901 Linhart Avenue #34. Sanchez-Mojica had an active warrant for violating his probation and surrendered to police. Further investigation by LCSO Detectives Frank Pooser and Mark Sewell along with FMPD Detective Emily Destefanis linked Sanchez-Mojica to four more robberies, one in the City of Fort Myers and three in Lee County. More charges are pending against Sanchez-Mojica. The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact law enforcement.

The U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Task Force is comprised of officers from the Cape Coral Police Department, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Fort Myers Police Department, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service.
