Police Investigating Traffic Crash

Categories: News

On Wednesday, June 05, 2013 at 10:26 a.m. the Fort Myers Police Department and the Fort Myers Fire Department responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Hanson Street.  A two-door Honda Civic and a box truck collided and then caught fire.  Police learned that the driver of the truck was in the southbound lanes on Cleveland Avenue in the middle of the intersection making a left turn onto Hanson Street when the traffic light turned red. The driver of the Honda was headed north on Cleveland Avenue in the second lane and ran the red light hitting the truck. Both drivers were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. No citations have been issued.

The crash closed the northbound lanes of Cleveland Avenue for almost six hours. All northbound and southbound lanes have reopened. The fire damaged the roadway. However, the Florida Department of Transportation has deemed the road safe and will make necessary repairs during the nighttime hours within the next week.  Currently, Hanson Street between Cleveland Avenue and Grand Avenue is closed as the Lee County Department of Transportation makes repairs to the traffic signal at that intersection.
