Sobriety Checkpoint Results

Categories: News

On Friday, May 24, 2013 the Fort Myers Police Department conducted a sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of Winkler Avenue and Center Point Drive. 525 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint from 11:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Police arrested a total of 13 people including seven for driving under the influence. Officers also issued 22 traffic citations. Other arrests included driving without a license, driving with a suspended license, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting a law enforcement officer. FMPD received assistance from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Mothers’ Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the Bruce L. Scheiner Law Office. Checkpoint emphasis is placed on the following:

  • Remove impaired drivers from the roadway
  • Reduce the likelihood impaired drivers will operate their vehicles on our roadways
  • Heighten awareness
  • Educate the public on the dangers of drunken driving

Sobriety checkpoints and other increased patrol operations are scheduled as part of the Fort Myers Police Department’s strategic plan and on-going efforts to make the streets safer by educating the public on traffic safety issues. FMPD received funding from the Florida Department of Transportation to host DUI checkpoints. The money helps purchase DUI checkpoint equipment and to pay officers overtime when they participate in the checkpoints.
