On Thursday, May 09, 2013 at 1:48 a.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a large street fight that was exiting the Pulse Nightclub located at 1527 Hendry Street. Officers observed multiple people physically fighting and screaming in the streets.
The fight and a crowd of onlookers moved to a parking lot located at 2201 Second Street. As officers intervened to stop the fighting and disperse the crowd, gunshots were fired by someone in a nearby car and into the crowd which included five police officers. No one was hurt.
After the gunfire stopped the vehicle sped off traveling south on Hendry Street. Officers in the area pursued the car east on S.R. 82 until it turned north on Velasco Street and then east on Indian Street where the suspects fled on foot. Police set up a perimeter using K9 but did not locate the suspects. Police seized the 2005 gray Pontiac and the evidence left behind by the suspects. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
“Thank God no one was hurt, said Chief Doug Baker. “To shoot into a crowd of people in a well populated area is brazen and to do it with police officers present shows the gross disregard the perpetrators have for society. We will not tolerate this kind of criminal element in our City and we will continue our efforts and tough stance against violent crime.”
Police arrested one person involved in the fight downtown. Henry Jenkins Jr. (d.o.b. 3-13-88 of Fort Myers ) was arrested for resisting an officer without violence and breach of peace. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call FMPD at 321-7700, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS or text message C-R-I-M-E-S (274637) Keyword FMPD. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
