Suspect Arrested for Aggravated Assault on LEO

Categories: News

On Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 3:11 a.m. officers with the Fort Myers Police Department were patrolling the parking lot of the Sphinx Hooka Lounge located at 2158 Colonial Boulevard due to a large crowd of patrons loitering in the area.

Officers had their patrol cars parked in front of the Harley Davidson store located at 2160 Colonial Boulevard. Officers were standing outside their cars monitoring the crowd. Suddenly, several shots were fired in their vicinity and then the officers heard rounds hit the building, feet from where they were standing. No one was hurt.

Officers took cover and armed themselves with their rifles. As backup units responded to the scene a witness approached one of them and provided a detailed description of the suspect. Officers tactically approached the suspect as he got into a sport utility vehicle and detained him as well as two other people in the SUV.

Officers located a handgun on the floorboard near the suspect. Officers also located four matching casings near the vehicle in the parking lot. After further investigation police arrested Tony James (d.o.b. 8-20-87 of Fort Myers) for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and carrying a concealed firearm.
