Categories: News

On Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at 4:35 a.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to an occupied burglary in the Paseo neighborhood. A female victim was asleep in her bed when she was awakened by a man who began to attack and stab her. The victim fought back and her son who was also awakened by the commotion walked in on the attack. The suspect fled the scene. The victim was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital trauma alert and is currently recovering from her injuries.

During the initial response to the crime, police developed a neighbor, John Maatsch (d.o.b. 4-3-80 of Fort Myers), as a suspect in the case. After further investigation police obtained forensic evidence that links Maatsch to the crime. On Monday, December 31, 2012, at the request of detectives, Maatsch voluntarily turned himself in to officers at police headquarters. Police arrested Maatsch for occupied burglary with a battery and aggravated battery. The motive for the crime remains under investigation.
