On Sunday, December 16, 2012 at 7:12 p.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to an assault with a firearm at 3345 South Street. An officer responding to the call for service spotted a male in the vicinity of the incident and attempted to stop and speak to the male. However, as the officer got out of his patrol car the male took off on foot. The officer ran after him yelling loud verbal commands to stop. The suspect ran into a field with heavy brush and then into a wooded area near the 3500 block of South Street. When the officer caught up with the suspect, the suspect removed a gun from his pocket and pointed it at the officer. The officer drew his weapon and discharged one round toward the suspect. The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. “I’m thankful no one was hurt,” said Chief Doug Baker. “This incident is a testament to the strength and courage of our officers and others in the profession who pursue suspects in the face of danger on a daily basis.”
Police arrested Willie Jones (d.o.b. 2-8-89 of Fort Myers) for resisting an officer without violence, loitering and prowling, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and use of a firearm during a felony. Police also arrested Tyler Hamilton (d.o.b. 8-1-91 of Fort Myers) for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill for the original crime on South Street. The two incidents and their connection remain under investigation. As part of standard procedure the officer that used his firearm has been placed on administrative leave pending a review of the use of force.
