Vehicle Owner Detains One Burglar, Summons FMPD to Apprehend the Other

Categories: News

On August 19, 2014 at 5:02 a.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a burglary in progress call at The Park at Veneto apartments located at 3810 Central Avenue. Upon arrival officers learned the owner of a 1994 Ford pickup truck, Jaron Ching, went outside his apartment to smoke a cigarette when he observed two males rummaging through the inside of his vehicle.

Ching approached the males and they fled on foot. After a short foot chase Ching was able to apprehend 14-year old Darius Tyrel Messier (d.o.b. 07/25/2000 of Fort Myers) and detain him until police arrival. Ching gave out a description of the second perpetrator to responding officers from FMPD’s Bravo shift and they began to canvass the area. Officer David Gaide observed a male matching the description running behind the Edison Park 8 Cinemas located at 2235 Winkler Avenue and took him into custody without incident. The second perpetrator was identified as 14-year old Cory Lee Simmons (d.o.b. 08/08/2000 of Fort Myers).

Both Messier and Simmons confessed to the crime and were charged with vehicle burglary and petit theft. They were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center for further processing. “This is probably the only instance where smoking was somewhat good for you,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Victor Medico.
