Update #1: The victim has died as a result of the injuries sustained from the hit and run crash. He has been identified as Luis Saez (d.o.b. 07/30/1991 of Fort Myers).
On July 29, 2014 at 1:59 a.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to a hit and run crash involving a pedestrian in the parking lot of Scarlett’s Cabaret of Fort Myers located at 3650 Fowler Street.
Upon arrival police learned a male later identified as Giovanni Alberto Cardona (d.o.b. 12/12/1992 of Fort Myers) was involved in a verbal altercation with a female inside the nightclub. Cardona left the club, entered his vehicle and began driving in reverse through the parking lot. At some point Cardona stopped his vehicle and began yelling at nightclub patrons in the parking lot. The victim approached Cardona’s vehicle and told him to leave. Cardona began driving in reverse again backing over the victim and continued in reverse until striking an air conditioning unit in the rear of the parking lot. Cardona then fled the parking lot in his vehicle.
A witness on scene followed Cardona to his residence in South Fort Myers while calling 911. A Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to that address and made contact with Cardona. Due to the severity of the incident FMPD Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Dallas Smart was summoned and met with the Deputy to continue the investigation. Based on the ensuing investigation Officer Smart arrested Cardona for the following:
• Hit and run – fail to remain at a crash involving serious bodily injury
• Hit and run – leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage
• Driving under the influence involving serious bodily injury to another
• Driving under the influence involving property damage
• Driving under the influence
The victim was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert and is currently listed in critical condition.
