FMPD Investigates Fatal Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Accident

Categories: News

Update 1: The pedestrian who died in Saturday’s crash has been positively identified as Deborah Diane Kirkland (d.o.b. 02/09/1959 of Cape Coral). Traffic Homicide Investigator Officer Jason Sandt has completed his investigation and found Kirkland at fault for violating the vehicle’s right-of-way. Officer Sandt listed contributing factors of failing to cross at a crosswalk coupled with Kirkland’s dark clothing. The vehicle driver, David Edward Turner, took evasive action to avoid hitting Kirkland but was unable to avoid the crash. Officer Sandt advised Turner showed no signs of impairment during the on scene investigation. It is unknown if Kirkland was intoxicated as toxicology reports are several weeks away. Turner will not be charged or cited for the accident.
