FMPD to Unveil MRAP

Categories: News

The Fort Myers Police Department has joined numerous agencies across the country by adding a new tool to help protect citizens and officers during high risk situations. The department recently took possession of an MRAP or mine-resistant ambush protection vehicle through the 10-33 program offered by the federal government. This program allows the Department of Defense to transfer excess military equipment to law enforcement at little to no cost. On Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., several department officials to include members of the S.W.A.T. team will be showing off the newest addition to the police force. All media outlets are encouraged to attend and get an up close look at this multi-faceted vehicle.

“This was a win-win situation for us. We secured a vehicle that will protect and serve for years to come while paying next to nothing for it,” said SWAT Team Commander Lieutenant Jeff Bernice. Acquired in March of this year the MRAP will be assisting FMPD in a wide variety of endeavors to include, but not limited to, various critical incidents such as natural disasters, HAZMAT, active shooter calls as well as hostage and rescue situations. “The Fort Myers Police Department is committed to finding alternate funding sources during these tough budgetary times in order to enhance the service we provide to the citizens and visitors of the City of Fort Myers,” said police spokesman Lieutenant Victor Medico.
