Categories: News

On January 30, 2014 at 12:59 p.m. the Fort Myers Police Department responded to 4791 Majorca Palms Drive in reference to victims of a robbery who were holding the perpetrator at bay. Once on scene officers located 16-year old Adrian Mangual-Ayala (d.o.b. 07/30/1997 of Fort Myers) being forcefully restrained on the ground by two subjects.

Police learned the two victims were at the Penny Saver located at 724 Ortiz Avenue cashing a check when Mangual-Ayala asked them for a ride home. The victims agreed and asked him to sit in the backseat of their red Oldsmobile.

While the victims were driving Mangual-Ayala home he brandished a firearm, placed it to the driver’s head and demanded money or he would kill them. The driver threw his money to the robber and the passenger jumped into the backseat to disarm him. The struggle ensued outside the vehicle where the victims were able to successfully restrain Mangual-Ayala until police arrival. Police located the firearm used during the offense in the backseat of the Oldsmobile after placing Mangual-Ayala into custody.

Mangual-Ayala was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for injuries sustained during the struggle with the victims. After Mangual-Ayala was treated and released he was charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm under 18 years of age. Mangual-Ayala was also charged with violation of probation.

“This was a scary situation and we are glad the victims weren’t seriously injured”, said Police Spokesman Lieutenant Victor Medico. “We understand the victims were just trying to be good citizens but we’d like to remind everyone of the dangers associated with strangers.”
