Categories: News

The Fort Myers Police Department’s Special Investigations Group with the assistance of the Violent Crimes Task Force, Community Policing Officers, Public Housing Officers and the Patrol Division began conducting a “roundup” of suspected drug dealers over the last week. Undercover detectives made drug buys from 31 drug dealers resulting in 90 felony charges and 10 misdemeanor charges.

The effort is an ongoing pursuit to curtail and eliminate street level drug sales. In the last calendar year, August 2012 to August 2013, the Special Investigations Group has conducted eight drug roundups.  The investigations have resulted in the arrests of 149 suspects for the sale of illegal drugs.   So far, 50 of the suspects have been found guilty and are currently serving jail or prison sentences or probation.  The remaining cases are making their way through the judicial system.

“I am proud of our efforts. This is a tremendous amount of work and commitment from our officers to make our neighborhoods safe,” said Chief Doug Baker. “We will continue to be vigilant against those involved in the drug trade as it is often the underlying root of violent crime.
