Operations Bureau

The Operations Bureau is commanded by Captain Rich Carr. Operations includes the largest number of police employees. Officers assigned to Operations are responsible for responding to calls for service from Fort Myers residents and businesses as well as conducting preliminary criminal investigations. The city is divided into four districts  which are commanded by the following Lieutenants: Jeff Bernice, Randy Jelks, Jay Rodriguez and Abdul Salaam.

Twenty sergeants and more than 120 patrol officers are assigned to the FMPD Operations Bureau. They are the backbone of the agency and have the most contact with the public. Patrol officers and sergeants respond to calls for service from citizens. They also initiate their own investigations when they witness crimes or notice a crime problem. Patrol officers also are assigned to specific zones, so they can watch for ongoing problems and issues. Each officer works hard to get to know the residents, business people and issues in his or her zone. They document their work on various reports and work closely with detectives, who investigate primarily felony crimes. Patrol officers make the majority of arrests for the agency.

Community Affairs

Community Affiars houses three separate units. The Alarm Services Unit is responsible for selling yearly permits for security systems in the City. They also are responsible for fining violators that have exceeded the allowable false alarms within the year set by City Ordinance. The Summons Enforcement Officer keeps track of the hundreds of subpoenas that are served on officers at the agency. They coordinate efforts to ensure officers are available to testify in criminal cases. Community Affairs is also responsible for managing the off-duty details that are requested by businesses and citizens to have police officers protect their properties.
