Operations Bureau
Specialty Units

The Operations Bureau includes a number of additional specialty units, each with a unique emphasis and special training.

The Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) includes highly trained officers who respond to dangerous situations including barricaded subjects, hostage situations or other incidents that may require specially trained and equipped officers. The majority of team activations are for arrests and search warrants. In addition to sworn police officers the team has an element of tactically trained paramedics from the Fort Myers Fire Department.

The Marine Unit is a proactive water patrol team that focuses on boater education and enforcement. They patrol the Caloosahatchee River and enforce manatee speed zones and boating safety laws. FMPD has one full-time marine officer. Other officers assist on a part-time basis.

Four officers and a Lieutenant are assigned to the FMPD Traffic Enforcement Unit. As the name implies, these officers focus on enforcing the state's traffic laws, both through citations of offenders and through public education. They also investigate traffic accidents, primarily those in which motorists suffer serious or fatal injuries.
