Mounted Horse & K-9 Patrol Minimize

The Fort Myers Police Department also utilizes horses and dogs in specialized patrolling.

The officers and horses that are part of the Mounted Patrol are used to proactively patrol and to prevent crime. For example, the Mounted Patrol works extensively at shopping centers during the holidays to prevent crime.

The Mounted Patrol also is utilized at special events to help patrol and for crowd control. Because of their popularity, the horses also help officers in talking to citizens arid interacting with children.

The K-9 Unit combines specially-trained officers with highly specialized dogs as their partners. The K-9 officers help patrol the city but also use their partners in the apprehension of criminals and in drug detection.

The K-9 officers also do a number of public demonstrations, which are always popular with children.
