The “Adopt-A-Senior” Program spreads holiday cheer every Christmas. Since 1999 the Fort Myers Police Department and other City employees have honored our City’s seniors with Christmas gifts.
Here’s how it works; Police and City employees that sign-up for the program are paired with a senior and given a wish list. The employee then buys their senior a gift from their list. “I am always impressed with our employees and their willingness to serve the community both professionally and personally,” said Chief Doug Baker. “It’s a wonderful event that shares the spirit of Christmas with people who might otherwise be alone this time of year.”
Annually close to 200 seniors from public housing facilities register for the event. FMPD Crime Prevention Practitioner Gretchen Lorenzo assists with the shopping and wrapping gifts. She also coordinates a buffet-style lunch with the Police Chief and Santa. Many area businesses also share in the good tidings by donating food and services.
