The Fort Myers Police Department’s Explorers Post #55 is a Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life career education program. The experience is open to young men and women between the ages of 14 (completed the 8th grade) and 20.

The objective of the program is to provide an in-depth look at law enforcement and related fields. Each participant will learn ethical decision making skills through positive social interaction, friendship, leadership development, hands-on experience, problem solving techniques and community service activities. All of this is done in a public service setting.

Most police explorers have an interest in law enforcement as a career and this program is a foot in the door to becoming mature, responsible peer leaders with the tools for furthering their ambitions. Activities include classroom presentations, practical exercises and ride-alongs with officers that focus on the latest crime prevention techniques.

FMPD Police Explorers focus on the following:

  • Building individual character
  • Developing leadership skills and potential
  • Gaining appreciation for community service
  • Becoming a good citizen

In addition to the age requirement participants must also meet the following criteria:

  • Maintain a 2.0 or higher G.P.A. in school
  • Be of good moral character
  • Have no discipline problems at home, school or work
  • Have an interest in law enforcement

FMPD Police Explorers train regularly to maintain and improve capabilities in the many facets of law enforcement. The activities are often action packed and include the following: Arrest and search, narcotics identification, crime scene investigation, community policing, the court system, handcuffing procedures, communications, firearms safety, defensive tactics, leadership training, physical fitness training, hostage negotiation, bomb threats, response to a burglary in progress, traffic and crowd control, patrol procedures, domestic intervention, crash investigations, first aid and CPR, criminal investigations, traffic stop procedures, building search procedures, officer safety, Florida criminal law, crisis intervention and verbal commands and control.
