There has never been a better time to join the Fort Myers Police Department. Our team of professionals are on the cutting edge of law enforcement and our result -driven approach is apparent.
Our approach motivates people to take pride in what they do, who they represent, and why they do it. The Fort Myers Police Department is one of the few agencies that adhere to a consistent training regimen. Each officer receives in-service training every eight weeks. The training enhances proficient performance in a variety of areas to include, but not limited to, use of force, defensive tactics, driving, domestic violence, investigations, human relations, crime scenes, and legal updates.
The Fort Myers Police Department, under the direction of Chief Douglas Baker, represents a long history of commitment to improving the quality of life for the citizens we serve. While the history of our department is rich in policing tradition, we've made great strides in improving the services that we deliver today, while we plan for tomorrow. Combining philosophies from traditional policing, community policing, and COMPSTAT, we continue to see results through accountability and leadership that is driven by team work, personal bests, and professional achievement.
Police Academy Self Sponsor: If you are a candidate who is looking to enter a law enforcement career, and have no formal training, you may do so by applying to Southwest Florida Public Service Academy located at 4312 E. Michigan Avenue, Fort Myers, FL 33916. The contact number for the local police academy is 239-334-3897. The police academy is approximately 22 weeks and encompasses topics from constitutional law to patrol techniques. The police academies in Florida are run independently by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). You as the candidate will need to participate in an interview and be accepted by the academy in order to attend. You will pay your own tuition and at the end of the course, if completed successfully, you will sit for a state exam. Once the state exam is completed successfully, you will be eligible for certification in the State of Florida.
Police Academy Sponsorship: Some agencies may employ you prior to having any police experience. The agency will “sponsor” you through the academy and pay the cost of the academy as well as keeping you on its payroll. For this type of opportunity, it is suggested that you contact the various agencies and inquire if this is an option through their department.
Certified Officer from another state: Visit the Police Applicant Screening Service (PASS) through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s website www.fdle.state.fl.us for specific information on whether you qualify for the Equivalency of Training. Generally, you must have one full year of full-time law enforcement experience (not counting academy time) to qualify for the two-week course.
