National Night Out

National Night Out

Categories: Community Programs

Every year the Fort Myers Police Department and neighborhoods throughout the City join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by FMPD, involves over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. Last year more than 37 million people participated in America’s night out against crime. National Night Out is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness.
  • Generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts.
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships.
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Residents are asked to turn on outside lights from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and spend the evening outside celebrating the partnerships between neighbors and police. Many local neighborhoods plan special events such as block parties and cookouts, with visits from police, community leaders, and other supporting organizations. Police also participate in an anticrime march
