Categories: Community Programs

KOPS is for kids ages 11-13 (middle school) and participation is free of charge.

The Fort Myers Police Department is accepting applications for its Kids Our Primary Source (K.O.P.S.) program. The program, similar to the Police Explorer program, is designed for middle school children ages 11-13. K.O.P.S. provides youth with an up-close look at law enforcement. The goal is to build positive relationships between police and the City’s youth and assist participants in becoming mature, responsible, peer leaders.

K.O.P.S. was created by Officer Dan Losapio in 2009. They meet the first Thursday of every month September through May from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Highlights include live police scenarios, SWAT demonstrations, K-9 demonstrations, hands-on equipment displays, team building activities and casual gatherings such as barbeques and skating parties. They also assist police with community events such as the Cops and Joggers 5K, the Edison Festival of Light Children’s Parade and other fun events that promote camaraderie. Participants receive t-shirts, hats and name badges. For more information about K.O.P.S. contact Officer Athena Mitchell at or 239-321-7700
