Fort Myers K.O.P.S

KOPS is for kids ages 11-13 (middle school) and participation is free of charge.

The purpose of the program is to provide student’s with an opportunity to learn more about the law enforcement career. The goal of the youth program is to create positive relationships between the Fort Myers Police Department and the local youth.

One of the goals of the Strategic Plan is to develop and implement early exposure programs and education about police careers as well as develop new programs and expand or improve existing programs appropriate to the needs of the community. Officer Losapio founded the K.O.P.S. Program in 2009.  K.O.P.S. is an acronym for Kids Our Primary Source. This program focuses on middle school age children between the ages of 11 and 14. The program is a stepping stone and provides a learning environment for this age group to familiarize them with the Fort Myers Police Department and eventually become an Explorer.

K.O.P.S. meets once a month and additionally take part in community events, which included assisting at the Cops and Joggers 5K run and helping with the Fall Festival at Orangewood Elementary School.  They played the role of elves for Santa Claus at the Fort Myers Police Department’s Adopt-A-Senior Event.

K.O.P.S. maintains the children’s enthusiasm of police work which will hopefully turn into participation as a Fort Myers Police Explorer.  K.O.P.S. is unlike any other law enforcement program and has placed the Fort Myers Police Department as a leader in youth relations. As both the Explorer and K.O.P.S. continue to grow, many of our youth will be able to learn through the positive programs.
