Police Explorers

The Fort Myers Police Department Explorer Post is an organization comprised of young adults, ages 14 to 19, interested in law enforcement careers. The Post provides them with an opportunity to experience the daily operations within the police department and helps create better understanding and cooperation between the Fort Myers Police Department and the area youth.

The Explorer program provides an opportunity to work along side of, train with, and assist police personnel. The Explorers receive specialized law enforcement training, attend weekly meetings, and volunteer their time within the community. The Explorer program instills ethical development for those who may be interested in a law enforcement career.

The program provides for young people support from their peers and adults during the maturing process. The result is a person not only better prepared for a law enforcement career, but a person more prepared for life.

Each year the Explorers have an opportunity to travel to quarterly Florida Association of Police Explorers Delegates meetings and annual State Competitions.

Many of the department's Explorers have gone on to successful careers both at the Fort Myers Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Police Explorers are highly motivated individuals between the ages of 14 and 19. Members of the Post are held to high standards which includes the Police Department's guiding values of Honor Ethics Accountability Respect and Teamwork.

Training

Explorers have the opportunity to become closely involved with police work through specialized training and details. Explorers are able to ride patrol with officers which enables them to gain enough personal experience to make an informed decision as to whether they really want to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Explorers participate in many aspects of police work but are not placed in dangerous situations. They will work side by side with advisors and officers to learn law enforcement skills. Explorers may even ride with officers to learn skills first hand. Along the way, they learn to work as a team, they gain leadership skills as they serve the community. The Explorer learns various aspects of police work. The program matches the interests of youth with adult expertise.

Experience first-hand how a police department functions and what it takes to get started in a challenging career in law enforcement. The program, geared around law enforcement, gives youth self-confidence, discipline, and a feeling of community involvement. The youths are trained in many aspects of law enforcement, including report writing, traffic stops, crime scene investigation, defensive tactics, firearm safety, arrest procedures, crimes in progress, etc. Explorers learn leadership skills, and develop self understanding and self confidence. This is all done in a positive environment.

Community Service

Explorers become involved in community service and assist officers with various tasks and events. Police Explorers perform a variety of community services which is not only personally satisfying but valuable experience which is frequently asked for when applying for college. The Explorers work with the Crime Prevention Unit assisting with Neighborhood Watch programs, D.A.R.E. functions, McGruff the Crime Dog, and larger events such as National Night Out, and the Edison Parade. They provide traffic control through out the year for various events and runs.

The Explorers are used frequently by the department as role players during training exercises for the police academy training. During training the department needs actors to play the roles of victims and witnesses and most often criminals. It is just as much a learning experience for the Explorer as it is the police officer in training.

The objective of the Fort Myers Police Explorers Post is to provide an in depth, first-hand experience in the related fields of law enforcement. All Explorer training is in accordance with the by-laws and guidelines of the Explorer Division of the Boy Scouts of America and the Fort Myers Police Department.

Our commitment is to improve relations between police officers and the youth in the City of Fort Myers through a close working relationship with youth who have expressed an interest in or are curious about police work.

The purpose of the Explorer program is to provide experiences to help young people mature and to become responsible and caring adults. These young adults learn ethical decision making through positive social interaction, leadership development, hands-on experience, problem solving skills, and service to the community.

The mission of the Fort Myers Police Explorer Program is to provide an opportunity for young men and woman to learn about law enforcement by using classroom presentations and practical exercises that focus on the latest crime prevention techniques. To provide a safe atmosphere that will guide young adults to a better path for the future through training, leadership, teamwork, discipline and friendship. To provide a means by which young men and woman may determine, through actual experience and training, if they would like to pursue a career in law enforcement as adults.
