Community Involvement

A police department cannot be successful without the support and involvement of its citizens. The Fort Myers Police Department is very fortunate to have many active volunteer programs and citizens willing to get involved. Most of the citizen-driven programs are coordinated by Lieutenant Mulligan. For more Information on any of the volunteer programs, or to sign up, call Lieutenant Mulligan at (239) 321-7774 or email him at jmulligan@fmpolice.com.

Police Force Enhanced with V.I.P Program

The new program is designed to enhance the department’s service delivery by allowing enthusiastic, dependable, committed citizens to work alongside fulltime members of the department.

Volunteers perform invaluable services; they act as goodwill ambassadors for the department, serve as additional eyes and ears and can assist in clerical and support roles.  The program allows citizens who wish to serve their community to do so in the public safety arena. Chief Doug Baker says the program is an effort to make the community safer and stronger. “The V.I.P. program allows citizens to take an active role in crime prevention. It brings another level of the general public into the police department and gives them a better understanding of the job we do and what they can do to help.”

Citizen volunteers must meet the following qualifications:

  • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Applicants must be of good moral character.
  • Possess a valid Florida Driver’s license.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Complete a background investigation that does not have a significant history of prior unlawful conduct.

Citizens in the V.I.P. program with training can be called upon to assist with special events, searches for missing people, during disasters, victim assistance, non-criminal fingerprinting and other services. For more information about the program or to become a V.I.P. contact FMPD at 321-7774.
