Fort Myers Police Department Awarded Accreditation

On Friday, March 20, 2020, Chief Diggs proudly announced the Fort Myers Police Department has been awarded Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, (CALEA). The CALEA Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation Program provides agencies an opportunity to go beyond the implementation of basic best practices.  Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation is available for agencies having enough human and fiscal resources to consistently exceed basic service delivery.  Advanced accreditation provides agencies additional means to verify accountability to those expecting and relying upon the highest level of public safety services.

Advanced Law Enforcement Accreditation utilizes additional standards to further validate an agency’s ongoing commitment to attaining the highest level of professionalism possible.  These advanced standards can also provide agencies additional reductions in exposure to risks associated with civil liability.

Chief Diggs, upon taking command of the Department in 2016, voluntarily withdrew from the accreditation process realizing policies and procedures were lacking in many areas. He instructed Accreditation Manager Randall Jones to begin reviewing and updating all policies, including collecting what is known as proofs to show the Department is adhering to its own policies. This process involved a total commitment from every member of the agency and took over three years to complete. In the end, the Commission praised the FMPD and Chief Diggs on the commitment shown to bring all policies in-line with national best practices.

CALEA® Executive Director W. Craig Hartley, Jr. stated, “Accreditation is an indication of an organization’s commitment to professional excellence, transparency as a governmental entity, and a willingness to accept direction as it relates to industry accepted best practices.”  Additionally, he said,” It supports the development of strong citizen confidence in their public safety service providers and works to enhance the capacity, professionalism and safety of public safety personnel.” He noted Chief Diggs has demonstrated a strong commitment to the accreditation process, as such, he has integrated standards-related strategies within the Fort Myers Police Department, with a focus on professional service and crime reduction for the citizens of Fort Myers.

“The process does not end at earning accreditation,” said Chief Diggs. “We must continue to review and revise policies to maintain national best practices, and ensure we stay in compliance in order to provide the highest quality of service available.”

CALEA continues to monitor accredited agencies and conducts a full review every three years.
