FMPD Helps to Distribute JROTC “Blessing Bags”

Cadets making bags

As their service learning project for 2017 – 2018 the JROTC program at Cypress Lake High in Fort Myers, Florida adopted “Operation Blessing Bags” with the mission of constructing 250 fabric bags and filling them with a wide variety of gifts and supplies that area first responders can distribute to victims of trauma, accidents or criminal acts to assist in their recovery.  Each bag is hand made by the cadets and contains a blanket, a bottle, a book and a variety of age appropriate items from toys to lip balm.

The cadets collected donations from area merchants and held fund raisers to purchase additional supplies to make bags for age groups that included children from 0 to 11, teens and the elderly. The Fort Myers Police Department and several other law enforcement and emergency agencies were selected to receive the blessing bags and distribute them to their personnel for use in helping the public. “In the execution of our duties we will often come to the assistance of children and families who have gone through a traumatic experience,” said Lt. Willie Tellis of the Fort Myers Police Department. “Being able to present them with one of these blessing bags can help sooth some of the stress they are going through,” he added.

Every year, the JROTC program at Cypress Lake High School identifies, selects, organizes and executes a service learning project, which is an extensive, entirely cadet-run community service project.
