Crime Analysis

One of the most effective methods of fighting crime is to carefully watch crime trends in the community. In January of 2002, the Fort Myers Police Department initiated a concept called "Compstat" or computer statistics. Simply stated, Compstat is a method of crime reduction. The Fort Myers Police Department's response area is divided into four districts - North, South, Central and West. One Lieutenant is assigned to each of the four districts. Crime analysis is done on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Resources are directed toward any trends police find in crime. By attacking the problem immediately additional crimes are often prevented and information on suspects collected, enabling police to arrest criminals before they commit more crimes. FMPD also has four Lieutenants that oversee specialty areas of the department. The department is structured to proactively reduce crime and encourage community involvement.
