About the Program
The Fort Myers Police Department welcomes citizens to become involved in its Volunteers in Policing (VIP) program. The program is designed to enhance the department’s service delivery by allowing enthusiastic, dependable, committed citizens to work alongside full-time members of the department.

Volunteer Services


Volunteers perform invaluable services such as:
  • Goodwill ambassadors for the department
  • Additional eyes and ears
  • Clerical and support roles
The program allows citizens who wish to serve their community to do so in the public safety arena. Chief Derrick Diggs says the program is an effort to make the community safer and stronger. “The VIP program allows citizens to take an active role in crime prevention. It brings another level of the general public into the Police Department and gives them a better understanding of the job we do and what they can do to help.”


Eligibility


Citizen volunteers must me the following qualifications:
  • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older
  • Applicants must be of good moral character
  • Possess a valid Florida driver’s license
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Complete a background investigation that does not have a significant history of prior unlawful conduct

Get Involved


Citizens in the VIP program with training can be called upon to assist with special events, searches for missing people, during disasters, victim assistance, non-criminal fingerprinting and other services.
